Babylonian Captivity (Papacy in Avignon) (19h 51min, jan 1, 1309 y – 2h 11min, jan 1, 1376 y)
Description:
Pope Clement V began relocating the papacy to Avignon, France instead of Rome. The papacy was slowly being rebuilt in Avignon until Pope Urban VII, returned the papacy to Rome.
The church was largely dependent on France during this time, so it was nicknamed the Babylonian Captivity of the Church.
The Papacy in Avignon eventually resulted in the Papal Schism (1378-1417), where there were three men asserting themselves as the true pope.
