Description:
The White Lotus Rebellion was initiated as a tax protest led by the White Lotus Society, a secret religious society. Underground societies such as the White Lotus began to form as many Chinese opposed joining the Manchu government and the Qing rule. Many wanted to 'revive the Ming'.
