The Great Trek (jan 1, 1835 – jan 1, 1846)

Description:

This was an eastward migration of Dutch-speaking settlers who moved by wagons from the Cape Colony into the interior of modern South Africa between 1835 and 1846. The settlers (Voortrekkers) sought to live far away from the Cape's British colonial leadership and authority.

This event was significant as it provided for the dispersal of the Dutch-speaking population into different areas of South Africa. It also caused a few minor skirmishes with the native population as well as some rather destructive wars such as the Battle of Blood River.
