Continuation of conflict in France (may 10, 1940 – jun 22, 1940)

Description:

Due to the movements of case Yellow, the heavily fortified area of the Maginot line was completely bypassed, attacking the less prepared forces from the lightly protected Ardennes forest.

German panzer forces attack using the Pincer movement, where larger and stronger panzer and infantry move towards the coast.

The Southern movement was causes immense disarray and the lack of French communication meant that German forces quickly met the coast near Abbeville, near the mouth of the English Channel.

As the prongs of the pincer moved inwards, it became certain that an allied evacuation could only occur across the sea. An attempted but failed allied counterattack at Arras caused further disarray. High civilian casualties followed.
26th May, all French and Belgian ports are captured, leaving only Dunkirk.

The Pincer movement continued to dwindle the area for allies, leaving a small pocket for the allies, with the only escape through Dunkirk.
