World War I (jul 28, 1914 – nov 11, 1918)

Description:

As WWI began, Britain was in a period of political unrest. There were concerns with the suffragettes and citizens began rallying behind the government. During this time, the British government began fearing food and labor shortages and passed legislation to allow the British government to take preventative measures to ensure they had the ability to intervene whenever they saw fit. The Defence of the Realm Act allowed the government to seize land and property needed for the war effort. In a literary sense, we see these thoughts of unrest in Joyce's writing at the dinner table over Christmas.
