Last seen alive (6 h, jul 10, 1973 y – 21 h, jul 10, 1973 y)
Description:
Some of the clippings (especially LBI/LBPT) erroneously state that Shaun was found on July 11, 1973, however all other sources point to him instead being found the day before.
Sources also vary regarding whether he was last seen in the morning of July 10th or instead at around 9pm on that date.
"The body [...] was found Tuesday night [7/10/73] on the east side of Harbor Lake in Wilmington. [...] The body was discovered about 10:05pm by two men returning to their car after some late night fishing. [...] The coroner's office said the victim, now listed simply as John Doe No. 94, may have been killed at the scene earlier in the evening. Investigators said the victim was found lying face-up near a dirt shoreline road about a quarter of a mile west of the golf course. He was bleeding from the left side of the head, which appeared to have been bludgeoned with an unknown type of instrument" (SPNP 7/11/73).
"The body [...] was found Tuesday night [7/10/73] in a parking lot at Harbor Lake in Harbor City. [...] Two fishermen discovered the body about 10pm on the east side of the lake about a half-mile from Harbor College. [...] Investigators said the clothing contained neither identification nor money" (LBPT 7/11/73).
"An autopsy [of a] neatly-dressed youth found Tuesday night [7/10/73] in a parking lot near Harbor Lake revealed that the victim apparently died from a massive skull fracture, coroner's deputies said. [...] Two fishermen found the young man, about 10pm, still alive, lying face-up about 50 feet from the east end of the lake in a parking lot, near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and the Harbor Freeway. The fishermen led police to the scene, but by the time paramedics were summoned, the victim was dead, authorities said" (LBI 7/12/73).
"[...] bludgeoned to death July 10 [1973] on the east side of Harbor Lake in Wilmington. [...] When the youth was discovered about 10pm July 10, [1973,] he was clad in a brown leather jacket, brown denim pants, and tan canvas shoes" (TDB 7/17/73).
"[...] Found July 10 [1973]. [...] [Shaun's father, Jack Maginnis] reported his son missing to Torrance police Thursday [7/12/73] after his son had not returned from a hitchhiking trip to Palos Verdes. [...] Shaun was found bludgeoned to death only an hour after he left his house at 631 Paseo de la Playa [in Torrance]" (TDB 7/18/73).
"The parents had filed a missing person report on Shaun [...]. Two fishermen found the boy dying of head injuries July 11 [1973] on a path near the east bank of Harbor Park Lake. [...] Sgt James Pitman said the boy told a sister on leaving the family home the morning of July 10 [1973] that he was going to hitchhike to a friend's home" (LBPT 7/18/73, LBI 7/19/73).
"[...] was bludgeoned to death July 10 [1973]. [...] Shaun was reported missing July 12 [1973] after he failed to return home on the night of July 10 [1973] after saying he was going to hitchhike to the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The youth apparently was last seen by his family about 9pm that night and an hour later he was found unconscious and near death on a dirt roadway alongside Harbor Lake. Police said that although the teenager was still alive when he was found by two fishermen, he died by the time paramedics were called to the scene" (SPNP 7/19/73).
"Young Maginnis was reported missing by his parents when he failed to return home July 11 [1973]" (PSN 7/19/73, SBNP 7/19/73).
"The parents said the youth left home July 10 [1973]. Authorities located the body the same day the youth left home. Police said he had apparently been beaten to death with a blunt instrument. His body was dumped in a parking lot behind Harbor College" (VCS 7/19/73).
"Shaun Alexander Maginnis [...] left his home on the morning of last July 10 [1973] to hitchhike to the home of a friend. When he failed to return that night, his parents filed a missing persons report. On the following day, two fishermen found a boy dying of head injuries on a path near the east bank of Harbor Lake Park in Harbor City" (LBI 10/14/73).
"[...] found dying of head injuries in Harbor City last July 11 [1973]. Young Maginnis left home on the previous day to hitchhike to a friend's house, and was found by two fishermen on a path near the east bank of Harbor Lake Park" (LBPT 10/18/73).
