Buffalo Hunters (jan 1, 1856 – jan 1, 1880)
Description:
The commercial slaughter of the 1860s to 1880s decimated North American bison populations from tens of millions to fewer than one thousand, directly shattering the survival of Plains Nations who relied on the animal for food, shelter, and clothing. This destruction was actively encouraged by military leaders to eliminate the Natives' primary resource, forcing tribes into starvation, destroying their self-sufficiency, and effectively compelling them to surrender their lands and move onto reservations.
