Leon Pinsker (jan 1, 1821 – jan 1, 1891)
Description:
Leon Pinsker was one of the key founders of Practical Zionism and an early supporter of Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel. After pogroms in the Russian Empire, he argued that Jews needed national independence because antisemitism was deeply rooted in European society.
His work Auto-Emancipation helped inspire the Hovevei Zion / Lovers of Zion movement. Practical Zionism focused less on waiting for international approval and more on building settlements, buying land, and creating facts on the ground.
