(Rivash) Rabbi Yitzḥak ben Sheshet (jan 1, 1326 – jan 1, 1408)
Description:
The Rivash was a major Spanish rabbi and halakhic authority. He lived during a difficult period for Spanish Jewry, including the persecutions of 1391, after which many Jews were forced to convert or flee. He eventually moved to North Africa, where he became a leading rabbinic authority.
His responsa became very important for later Jewish law, and his life reflects the growing instability of Jewish life in Spain before the expulsion of 1492.
