(Raavad) Rabbi Avraham ben David of Posquières (jan 1, 1125 – jan 1, 1198)
Description:
The Raavad was a major halakhic authority and critic of the Rambam. He is especially famous for writing critical notes on the Rambam’s Mishneh Torah, often disagreeing with him or adding alternative views. His comments became part of the standard study of Rambam’s legal code.
Raavad is important because he represents the culture of strong rabbinic debate among the Rishonim. His disagreements with Rambam helped shape later halakhic discussion and kept multiple legal traditions alive.
