Abravanel was one of the last major Rishonim and lived through the Spanish Expulsion of 1492. He was a statesman, financier, philosopher, and biblical commentator. His writings often connect biblical interpretation with politics, history, kingship, exile, and redemption.
His life marks the end of the golden age of Spanish Jewry and the beginning of the early modern Jewish world after the expulsions from Spain and Portugal.
