Sherira Gaon (jan 1, 906 – jan 1, 1006)
Description:
Sherira Gaon was one of the greatest Geonim of Pumbedita. He became Gaon in 968 CE and is famous for his Iggeret Rav Sherira Gaon, a letter explaining the chain of rabbinic tradition from the Mishnah and Talmud through the Geonic period.
Sherira Gaon is extremely important because he helps us understand the history of the sages themselves. Much of how we organize the periods of Tannaim, Amoraim, Savoraim, and Geonim depends on traditions preserved by him.
