Description:

Mar Rab Mar is remembered as one of the first major Geonim of Sura. According to Sherira Gaon’s tradition, he became the first Gaon of Sura around 609 CE.

For your timeline, he represents the rise of Sura as one of the two great Babylonian academies. Together with Pumbedita, Sura became a major center of Jewish law, Talmud study, and rabbinic authority.
