Rav Huna (jan 1, 216 – jan 1, 297)
Description:
Rav Huna was one of the most important Babylonian sages after Rav / Abba Arika, the founder of the Sura academy. He became the leading rabbi of Sura and helped turn Babylonia into one of the greatest centers of Jewish Torah learning. He was known for his deep knowledge of halakhah, his leadership, and his connection to the earlier teachings of Rav.
In the Talmud, Rav Huna appears constantly in legal discussions, showing how Jewish law developed in Babylonia after the Mishnah. He was also remembered as a respected communal leader who supported Torah scholars and taught many students. His importance is that he helped continue Rav’s legacy and strengthen the Babylonian academies that later produced the Babylonian Talmud.
