Rabban Gamliel HaZaken (jan 1, 10 BC – jan 1, 50)
Description:
Rabban Gamliel HaZaken was one of the earliest great rabbinic sages of the Mishnah period. He came from the house of Hillel (Grandson) and helped continue Hillel’s legal and spiritual tradition. He is remembered as a respected leader of the Sanhedrin before the destruction of the Second Temple.
He is also known from the New Testament as the teacher of Paul and as a respected Pharisaic legal authority, but from the Jewish perspective his importance is mainly as an early Tanna and leader in the chain of rabbinic tradition. The Mishnah remembers him with great honor, saying that when he died, reverence for Torah and purity declined.
