Yose ben Yoezer & Yose ben Yochanan (jan 1, 200 BC – jan 1, 150 BC)
Description:
Yose ben Yoezer of Tzeredah and Yose ben Yochanan of Jerusalem are remembered as the first pair of Zugot. They lived around the time of the Maccabean struggle, when Judea was under heavy Hellenistic influence and Jewish society was fighting to preserve Torah identity. Yose ben Yoezer is traditionally remembered as the Nasi, while Yose ben Yochanan served as Av Beit Din. The Zugot system itself is described as pairs of leaders, one serving as president and the other as head of the court.
For your timeline, this pair represents the beginning of the rabbinic leadership model before the Mishnah. Their period is important because it comes right at the moment when Jewish leadership was shifting from biblical-style authority and priestly power toward organized Torah sages and legal teachers.
