Description:
Rav, also called Abba Arika, was one of the first great Babylonian Amoraim. He studied in the Land of Israel but returned to Babylonia and founded the great academy of Sura, which became one of the most important centers of Jewish learning. His teachings helped begin the rise of Babylonian Torah scholarship that would eventually lead to the Babylonian Talmud.
