Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai was one of the most important sages during the destruction of the Second Temple. According to rabbinic tradition, he escaped besieged Jerusalem and helped establish the Torah center at Yavneh.His work helped Judaism survive after the Temple’s destruction. Instead of Temple sacrifice, Jewish life became centered more strongly around Torah study, prayer, halakhah, and rabbinic leadership
