Ehud Barak (jan 1, 1999 – jan 1, 2001)
Description:
Ehud Barak became prime minister in 1999 after a long military career, including serving as IDF Chief of Staff. He withdrew Israeli forces from southern Lebanon in 2000, ending Israel’s long military presence there. He also attempted major peace negotiations with the Palestinians and Syria.
His term collapsed during the outbreak of the Second Intifada, which brought heavy violence and destroyed much of the optimism from the peace process. Barak’s premiership is remembered as ambitious but short and turbulent.
