King Herod Agrippa I (jan 1, 41 – jan 1, 44)
Description:
Herod Agrippa I, grandson of Herod the Great, ruled from 37–44 CE, gradually receiving more territory from Rome. By 41 CE, he controlled a kingdom close in size to Herod the Great’s old kingdom, including Judea, Galilee, and surrounding regions. This briefly restored a united Herodian kingdom.
Agrippa I was more popular among many Jews than earlier Herodians because he showed respect for Jewish law and Temple life. From a Jewish perspective, his reign was a short moment when local Jewish-oriented rule seemed restored under Rome. However, after his death in 44 CE, much of the land returned to direct Roman administration, increasing tensions before the First Jewish–Roman War.
