Herod Antipas (Galilee & Perea) (jan 1, 4 BC – jan 1, 39)
Description:
Herod Antipas, another son of Herod the Great, ruled Galilee and Perea from 4 BCE–39 CE as tetrarch. He founded Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee and maintained loyalty to Rome. His territory was not centered on Jerusalem, but Galilee became very important during the late Second Temple period.
From a Jewish perspective, Antipas represents the continued Herodian presence under Roman control. He was involved in regional politics and is remembered for his controversial marriage to Herodias, which caused criticism from religious figures. He was eventually accused of ambition against Rome and was exiled by Emperor Caligula.
