Ezra (Priest & Scribe) (jan 1, 458 BC – jan 1, 440 BC)
Description:
Ezra was a priest and scribe who came to Judah during the Persian period to strengthen Torah observance among the returned Jewish community. He is remembered for teaching the Torah publicly, organizing religious life, and confronting intermarriage and assimilation. From a Jewish perspective, Ezra is one of the most important figures after the exile because he helped re-center Jewish identity around the Torah, prayer, and communal responsibility. Later tradition sees him as a major restorer of Jewish religious life after the destruction of the First Temple.
