Jonathan Apphus (High Priest) (jan 1, 160 BC – jan 1, 142 BC)
Description:
Jonathan, another son of Mattathias, took leadership after Judah’s death. He was both a military and political leader, but he was also important because he became High Priest, giving the Hasmoneans religious authority as well as political power. This was a major turning point because the family began moving from rebellion into formal leadership.
Jonathan used diplomacy between rival Seleucid claimants to strengthen Judea’s position. However, the combination of military leadership and priestly office also created future tensions, because the Hasmoneans were priests but not from the Davidic royal line. He was eventually captured and killed through political betrayal.
