Menahem took the throne after killing Shallum and ruled with extreme brutality, even described as destroying entire populations that resisted him. Politically, he faced the growing threat of Assyria under Tiglath-Pileser III. Instead of resisting, Menahem paid heavy tribute to Assyria, essentially making Israel a vassal state to secure his rule. This marked a major turning point—Israel lost real independence. Like all before him, he continued the sins of Jeroboam, showing no religious reform despite the worsening situation.
