King Omri (Israel) (jan 9, 885 BC – jan 1, 874 BC)
Description:
Omri rose to power after a period of instability and civil war, defeating Zimri and then Tibni to secure the throne. He established Samaria as the new capital, which became the political and religious center of the northern kingdom. Politically, he was one of the strongest kings—so influential that even foreign records (like Assyrian inscriptions) referred to Israel as the “House of Omri.” However, spiritually he “did worse than all before him,” continuing and strengthening the system of idolatry initiated by Jeroboam. His dynasty became one of the most powerful, especially through alliances with neighboring kingdoms, including Phoenicia through his son.
