Fenian Raids (apr 17, 1866 – feb 22, 1875)

Description:

The Fenian Brotherhood was a organization of Irish patriots who migrated from Ireland to the United States. The goal of the movement was to conquer Canada and exchanging it with Britain for Irish independence. The Fenians launched a series of raids into Canada, each of which was put down by government forces.

The society suffered a blow in 1865 when Britain crushed the Irish independence movement, scattering its leaders and sending most of its members fleeing to the United States. This situation left many Irish within the United States even further against Britain. The membership of the Brotherhood grew from only a thousand to well over 15 thousand men.

Soon after Fenians, the Fenians staged a raid against in New Ireland, burning a few buildings before retreating. Throughout 1866, the Brotherhood continued to apply pressure to multiple areas to throw off British ability to prepare. However each of the raids continued to fail.

The independence and expansion of Vesperia in 1867 fueled Fenian ambitions, this mixed with American anger over the UK influence in the May Protectorate resulted in the Brotherhood receiving financial support from the US. The Brotherhood would also negotiate an alliance with the Métis of the Red River Rebellion.

Inspired by their newfound alliance, the Fenian Brotherhood invaded Wisconsin and took a few towns, before being betrayed by the Métis. Many leaders were turned over to and executed by the British.

The Fenian Brotherhood went into hiding after the Red River Rebellion ended, making only minor border raids. When the Third Anglo-American War occurred, the remaining members of the Brotherhood made a massive raid into British Columbia.

When the US lost this war and were forced to pull back support from the Fenian Brotherhood, the Brotherhood fell into decline until early 1875, when they made a final push into Quebec. Which ended in the capture of the remaining leaders and dissolution of the Brotherhood.
