Second Schleswig War (dec 24, 1863 – oct 30, 1864)

Description:

Fought over the same reason as the First Schleswig War, the Second Schleswig War was over the Schleswig-Holstein Question.

Conflict arose when the Danish king died without an heir acceptable to the German Confederation, additionally, controversy arose due to the passing of the November Constitution, which integrated the Duchy of Schleswig into the Danish kingdom in violation of the London Protocol.

In December 1863, troops marched into Holstein on behalf of the Confederation and took control of the government of Holstein. Austria and Germany issued an ultimatum to Denmark demanding that the November Constitution should be abolished within 48 hours. This was impossible due to the timeframe and when Denmark refused, Germany declared war.

Unlike in the First war, all the inland waters and marshes that the Danes were relying on as defense were frozen hard and could be crossed easily. After less than a year of conflict, the Treaty of Vienna was signed; ceding Holstein to Austria and Schleswig [except for the islands of Fehmarn, Ærø and Røm, which remained Danish] to Prussia.
