The Grossyan Revolution [Ní'reia Gírotiasqiis] (jul 12, 1824 – feb 24, 1832)

Description:

The Grossyan Revolution was a bloody war that orchestrated the rise and fall of the largest Grotian Royalist faction in Grossyan history.

It led to massive change in most of Yueroki with a shift from monarchism to a growth of republicanism.

Revolution was quite low to begin with in Grotian and at first did not involve the want to dismantle the monarchy. Instead, it started among the nobles, specifically from the former Livogora who disagreed with taxation being put upon them rather than other Grotian nobles. They decided to protest the new laws being passed and after a few weeks of debate, the law was extended to all nobles. This did not go over well with the Grotian nobles and so more protesting occurred. The King then decided to abolish the Council of Lords which led to tensions between the upper classes. Eventually, the flaws among the aristocrats began to be really shown and despised by the lower classes and they began to protest. Conventions and local councils started forming to bring power into local hands rather than aristocratic ones and this was dealt with mass arrests by the nobles. In response, most of the lower classes decided to follow suit with what the nobles did and refuse to pay taxes. This led to massive infrastructure problems to occur and blame was placed on the monarchy and nobles. Then, when the king decided to abolish the Council of the People, more rioting and protesting began, primarily in the bigger cities like Grotii Asqatuuria and Banuria. By the end of 1824, disruption of governance was fully in place and the king was starting to really lose his grip on power. The nobles split between sides, the Baquarimorians [Baquarímoriam] (who supported the royalists and more conservative policies) and the Dethians [Dethiam] (who were more closely aligned with the lower class and seen as more radical, yet not fully on their side). The Baquarimorians sided more so with the king, but within their group, some supported more with the Grotian nobles who didn't pay taxes and the others with the king. For the Dethians, they were split internally as well between those who simply sided against the Baquarimorians/king, those who supported more local governance, and also those who just wanted others to pay taxes as well. Other political groups emerged too, but in the first phase of the Revolution, the battle within the local councils and conventions that occurred took place between the loud Baquarimorians and the cold yet collected Dethians. This first phase was known as The Troubles which lasted until January of 1825.

The Troubles ended as things started to genuinely get out of control after a mass demonstration in Grotii Asqatuuria by market peasants became a massacre, known as the Derona Square Massacre. Around 45 people were shot and killed by the Royal guards who were stationed to keep the peace. It was at first unclear as to why the guards shot, but what was told was that orders were given by General Sanashia Iiqalqa as the mob started trying to move out of the square and towards the Royal Palace. Only one guard was killed after he was dragged down in the middle of the chaos from his horse by Revolutionaries and beat to death. Another was wounded by the stolen gun, but the Revolutionaries were soon shot and killed too. After the massacre, the Congress of Revolutionary Reform (CRR), which had been established in the middle of November by the Lower and Middle Classes, convened and began debating and writing multiple documents to force the King to agree too. The three documents finalized included the Declaration of the Rights of the Citizen, Declaration of the Voice of the People, and the Ordinance for the Establishment of the People's Senate and were given to the King on February 3, 1825. For two weeks, the king ignored them, but then radicalized peasants and artisans took up arms and stormed the Royal Palace and attempted to force his signature. However, right before this, the King was notified of a growing mob that was going to capture and kill him and his family and so he fled mere minutes before the attack. With the King now away from Grotii Asqatuuria and on his way to some safe place, the CRR convened once more and began debates as to what should be done. The debating was multiple days long and involved a battle for power between the Baquarimorians and the Dethians. Fierce debates that lasted hours and hours took place and eventually with the Dethian leader, a lawyer named Thosia Giimatia, finally having gotten somewhere, had completed a document that proclaimed the founding of the Republic of Grossya. This document, not necessarily a constitution, but rather a Declaration of the Independence of the People of the Rightful Republic, stated that the Congress of Revolutionary Reform would be reorganized into the Revolutionary Council and announced war against the Kingdom of Grotia. The document was presented to the CRR and even more debate occurred, but after a few more days on March 8, the document was accepted with a vote of 168-103. This began the next phase known as the Armament.

For the next few months, local riots and protests began popping up in every major Grossqi city and town, with some capitulating and joining the new Republic and others staying loyal to the king. The Republic did not demand really at first true and complete independence, only compromise with the King. Thosia Giimatia became the unofficial figure head of this new nation as he began writing documents that helped define what this "nation" truly was and what the concept could mean. He and the king decided to meet to try to settle things on March 12. The meeting went basically nowhere and the king had Giimatia imprisoned and ready to be killed. However, revolutionary forces marched on the King's summer palace where he was being held and rescued him. This tainted relations between them much more and directly led to the first battle in the revolution which was surely becoming a civil war. Some of the nobles in support of the Revolution did not approve of completely declaring independence and certainly did not support being led by Giimatia even if it was unofficial. So, division within the newly formed republic occurred quite quickly and led to much internal conflict. Council meetings became extremely heated every single time and some even led to violence, riots and protests were a very common thing from day to day, famine started to worsen, and industry started to genuinely fail due to workers striking everywhere in every section. The whole situation was worsening and falling out of control for every side and by the start of April, the Republic was greatly weakened and so was the Monarchy.

With the onset of April, battles both from the military and the mobs grew in number. The clashes between royalist and revolutionary forces was almost always unimportant and led to no decisive victories or defeats. Mob violence was common and caused even more disruption for the working class as strikers would be a usual participant in them. Giimatia and his supporters had decided to take action in the RC and use the growing violence to rid those who did not support the revolution and him. The period known as the April Scare began and accusations were thrown all over, primarily towards Baquarimorians and conservative Dethians. The whole situation pushed Giimatia and other Dethians much more radical and basically fully revolutionary. By the end of April, most of Giimatia's rivals had been executed by hanging and he had established control over the RC. This allowed him to finally push policies that he would send to other local councils to help get people working again, instead of just rioting and protesting. Those who did not work or continued to just rebel would be hung and those who put in labor would receive bonuses. Eventually after some time, the situation became manageable, though riots and protests still continued to occur. This allowed Giimatia's revolutionary council to finally have more time to deal with the fighting against the royalty. However, during this entire phase, other cities and towns revolted against the republic and formed their own revolutionary governments. So, the phase known as The Period Complete Revolution began. Fighting between revolutionary cells also occurred and the largest revolutionary rival to the RC was the Oluman Revolutionary Front, located primarily in Olmaanria. They posed the greatest threat and wanted to establish a Republic of Olumia. However, still Grotian nationalism and imperialism was a strong belief in Giitamia and the rest of the Asqatuurian Revolutionaries. The Royalist still controlled much of Grotia, primarily holding control over the North and East. The RC controlled much of the Central Regions and some of the Southern parts, with various other revolutionary cells spread sporadically across the rest of the Grotii territories.
