Franco-Brazilian War (sep 16, 1883 – jul 23, 1886)

Description:

After the French refused to evacuate the Brazilian areas of the Guyana Shield in 1873, Brazil was initially encouraged by the other powers of South America to ignore the trespass. However, by 1880, seven years following the French violation, Brazil occupied the region. After three years of threats and attempted negotiations by Venezuela and the Netherlands, the the Empire declared war on France in 1883.

The war was fairly one sided, however the Brazilians had an advantage of fighting in their home territory in the Amazon. This allowed the war to continue into 1886, when the two nations met in Paris to sign the Treaty of Counani.

The Treaty of Counani established the Northeastern section of the Brazilian Guyana Shield as the Republic of Counani, a French protectorate.
