The third and penultimate era of the Cold War is known as Détente, meaning literally relaxation. This period is known for thawing of superpower tensions and improved relations between the East and West. The most notable events during this time were the ending of the Vietnam War, the admission of China to the UN, and the SALT 1 agreement.
