Unlike in many parts of KY and the south, Louisville’s earliest watchmen do not seem to have their origins in slave patrols, however they were a tool used in resolving “unrest” and maintaining hierarchies for slave owners: specifically granted what’s referred to as “discretionary latitude in controlling slaves”Added to timeline:
