CLINIAS + CHALCIS DECREES + 446-5 BC - 30 yrs peace treaty (jan 1, 447 BC – jan 1, 445 BC)

Description:

CLINIAS 447:
“It was resolved by the Council and the People, that the Council and the archon in the cities and the inspectors are to see to it that the tribute shall be collected each year and brought to Athens"

tldr: DL thought their purpose was fulfilled after 448 BC Peace of Callias Treaty so stopped paying tributes --> but PERICLES still needed the money (his phoros) and so passed the Clinias Decree: those who refused to pay would have to plead their case at Athens + reduced league members 175 -to> 150

CHALKIS 446:
- Euboea revolted from Athens
- In 446-5 BC issued harsh decree

"I will not revolt from the Athenians by any device or contrivance whatsoever"

"whosoever shall not swear shall be deprived of citizenship and his property confiscated and the tenth part of his property shall be devoted to Olympian Zeus"

30YR PEACE TREATY
Athens needed to devote more energy to maintaining their naval empire → to do this they had to secure a lasting peace with the Peloponnesians.

- resulted in the signing of the Thirty Years Peace treaty although it lasted less than 15
- provided a period of relative stability in the Greek world

however, in 440 BC, the revolt of Samos nearly ended the treaty far sooner than this
