revolt and subjugation of Naxos (jan 1, 470 BC – jan 1, 469 BC)
Description:
One of the largest islands in the Aegean and an important ship-contributing member of the Delian league
“... Naxos left the League and the Athenians made war on the place. After a siege Naxos was forced back to allegiance. This was the first case when the original constitution of the League was broken and an allied city lost its independence …” – Thucydides the Peloponnesian War 1.99
Possible reasons:
- Oligarchs of Naxos coming to power again and wanting to go to Persia for support to regain control
- Considered Persians to be not a threat and did not want to continue paying contribution (ships) to the League
- NOT CERTAIN WHAT PUNISHMENT WAS METED: probs lost its independence + right to vote in council at Delos. May have been required to pay tribute as money
First example of recurring pattern: revolt of a member state + loss of independence
