- Economic importance → gold mines of Mt Pangaeus + centre of exchange for rich resources from the hinterland (ores, timber, corn)

- symbolised Athenian confidence in their growing naval power
- ESTABLISHMENT OF AN ATHENIAN SETTLEMENT ON THE ISLAND (kleruchy)
- Later established Kleroi all over the Aegean
