Description:

Coverture is a legal doctrine under which, upon marriage, a woman's legal rights were subsumed by those of her husband - that she is his property and therefore may be beaten, raped, etc. Came from English common law doctrine and carried over into the colonies. American and English law subscribed to the system of coverture until the 20th century.
