The dissolution of the monasteries (1536-1541) was King Henry VIII's process of dismantling religious monastic institutions and appropriating their wealth and lands for the Crown. This policy, a significant part of the English Reformation and English Civil War, was driven by Henry VIII's desire to control the Church, accumulate vast wealth, and eliminate a potential source of opposition to his authority as the Supreme Head of the Church of England. The process began with the Act of Supremacy in 1534, which asserted royal power over the church, and continued with the closure of smaller monasteries in 1536 and larger ones in 1539, ultimately seizing the vast properties of the monastic system.
