Alaric's Rebellion (jan 17, 395 – aug 24, 410)
Description:
After the Gothic war, a new Gothic leader, Alaric I, emerged who for unknown reasons rebelled once more against the Empire.
He partially suceeded, with Western troops stuck defending the Rhine, Emperor Theodosius could not destroy the army.
In 383, the west was usurped yet again by Magnus Maximus. Theodosius defeated him and installed his own 4 year old son along with a Frankish officer, Arbogast, the last loyal western officer left.
Arbogast soon murdered the 4 year old Valentinian II. In 394 he was defeated by Theodosius mostly thanks to Alaric and his Gothic soldiers.
Theodosius refused to reward Alaric or his Goths and treated his men as disposible compared to that of a Roman.
In response Alaric now King of the Visigoths revolted and invaded Greece, then Italy to force the government to recognise his people's status.
