Loss of Iberia (Part 1) (oct 2, 409 – jan 1, 418)

Description:

To secure his southern flank the western usurper general Constantine III sent Alans that had allied with him to the Pyrenees. But his commanding officer Gerontius betrayed him and withdrew his soldiers.

In October 409, the Vandal, Alanian and Suebian tribes from the prior Crossing of the Rhine, arrived in Spain. The Romans could do little to stop this.

By 411, the groups had divided Iberia amongst themselves, the Vandals receiving the south, the Suebi receiving Galicia and the Alans receiving the rest.

Afterward, the Alans and Vandals wished to be seen a vassals to Rome in a request to Emperor Honorius. The emperor rejected this, wishing to conquer them instead.

In 416, the Honorius, now allied with the Visigoths commanded them to attack the Vandals and the Alans to bring Iberia to heel. He partially suceeded in 418, but the Vandals and Alans united and fled to southern Iberia where they remained until 422.
