Homestead Act (jan 1, 1862 – jan 1, 1876)
Description:
The homestead act of 1862 provided 160 acres of free federal land to citizens and intended citizens who agreed to cultivate and improve the land for five years, with the goal of encouraging settlement and economic growth in the American West. This act applied to all U.S. citizens. Any U.S. citizen, which included formerly enslaved people and women could claim a homestead.
