Initiative and Referendum (jan 1, 1897 – jan 1, 1992)
Description:
Initiative allows the citizens to propose new laws or amendments through petitions. Referendum allows the citizens to approve or reject recent laws that were passed by the elected officials. The first state to allow this was Nebraska in 1897 but South Dakota was the first state to adopt this into their constitution for the citizens in 1898. Mississippi would be the last state to adopt this into their laws in 1992 as of today. (Expression of Sentiments no.7)
