Charlemagne was a Frankish king who reigned from 768 to 814 AD. He significantly expanded his kingdom through military campaigns, uniting much of Western and Central Europe. He was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by the Pope in 800 AD, establishing a new Western European empire. Charlemagne is historically significant because of his administrative, legal, and educational reforms, which had a lasting impact on European history. This includes creating a more unified legal system, a standardised system of weights and measures, establishing schools and promoting christianity, which has shaped western european education, law and religion.
