The ANC Leads the Anti-Apartheid Struggle (1912 CE – Present) (jan 1, 1912 – 4h 15min, jun 10, 2026 y)
Description:
Founded in 1912 as the South African Native National Congress, the African National Congress (ANC) became the leading force in the fight against apartheid. Initially focused on petitions and legal appeals, the ANC shifted to mass mobilization and civil disobedience in the 1950s. After being banned in 1960, it operated underground and in exile, forming an armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, in 1961. The ANC played a central role in organizing resistance, lobbying internationally, and negotiating the end of apartheid. In 1994, the ANC won South Africa’s first democratic elections, and Nelson Mandela became president. Today, the ANC remains the ruling party.
