Global Sanctions Pressure South Africa (1960s CE – Early 1990s CE) (jan 1, 1960 – dec 31, 1990)
Description:
As apartheid’s brutality became more widely known, countries around the world began imposing economic and political sanctions on South Africa. After the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960, the United Nations called for sanctions, and by the 1980s, many nations—including the United States, United Kingdom, and members of the Commonwealth—had enacted trade restrictions, arms embargoes, and cultural boycotts. These sanctions, combined with internal resistance, severely weakened South Africa’s economy and international standing. The pressure contributed significantly to the government’s decision to begin dismantling apartheid in the early 1990s.
