Description:

F.W. de Klerk became President of South Africa on September 14, 1989, and played a pivotal role in ending apartheid. On February 2, 1990, he announced the unbanning of the ANC and other liberation movements and ordered the release of Nelson Mandela De Klerk worked closely with Mandela to negotiate a peaceful transition to democracy. For their efforts, both leaders were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. De Klerk served as Deputy President in Mandela’s government until 1996.
