Description:

Nelson Mandela, a leader of the African National Congress (ANC) and its armed wing Umkhonto we Sizwe, was arrested on August 5, 1962, and later sentenced to life imprisonment on June 12, 1964, during the Rivonia Trial3. He spent 27 years in prison, mostly on Robben Island, becoming a global symbol of resistance. Mandela was released on February 11, 1990, and led negotiations to end apartheid. On May 10, 1994, he was inaugurated as South Africa’s first Black president, promoting reconciliation and unity.
