Jomo Kenyatta was a central figure in Kenya’s struggle for independence from British rule. After years of resistance, including the Mau Mau uprising, Kenya gained independence on December 12, 1963, with Kenyatta as Prime Minister. A year later, in 1964, Kenya became a republic, and Kenyatta became its first President. He focused on national unity, economic development, and reconciliation among Kenya’s diverse ethnic groups. Kenyatta remained in office until his death on August 22, 1978, and is remembered as the father of the Kenyan nation
