Kwame Nkrumah Leads Ghana to Independence (March 6, 1957 CE – February 24, 1966 CE) (mar 6, 1957 – feb 24, 1966)
Description:
Kwame Nkrumah was the driving force behind Ghana’s independence from British colonial rule. On March 6, 1957, Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast) became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence, with Nkrumah as its first Prime Minister. A passionate advocate of Pan-Africanism, Nkrumah envisioned a united Africa free from colonial domination. In 1960, Ghana became a republic, and Nkrumah assumed the role of President. His leadership emphasized industrialization, education, and continental unity. However, his presidency ended abruptly on February 24, 1966, when he was overthrown in a military coup while on a peace mission abroad.
