Resistance (1885 CE – 1960 CE) (feb 26, 1885 – dec 31, 1960)
Description:
Throughout the colonial period, African people actively resisted foreign rule in many ways. Resistance included organized protests, armed uprisings, and efforts to preserve African traditions, languages, and leadership. Some of the most well-known examples include the Ashanti Wars (1823–1900 CE) in present-day Ghana, where the Ashanti Empire fought against British expansion, and the Maji Maji Rebellion (July 1905 – August 1907 CE) in German East Africa (now Tanzania), where thousands of Africans united against forced labor and colonial violence. Resistance also took cultural forms, such as maintaining indigenous religions, oral histories, and traditional governance systems. These efforts showed that African communities were not passive victims of colonialism—they fought to protect their land, identity, and freedom.
