The Song Dynasty was a period of remarkable technological and economic advancement. It is divided into the Northern Song and Southern Song periods, with the latter arising after the loss of northern China to nomadic invaders. The Song era saw the invention of movable type printing, gunpowder weapons, and the magnetic compass. Urbanization and commerce flourished, and Neo-Confucianism became the dominant ideology. However, military weakness eventually led to its conquest by the Mongols.
