Nok Culture Flourishes (Nigeria) – c. 500 BCE – 200 CE (jan 1, 500 BC – jan 1, 200)
Description:
The Nok civilization in central Nigeria developed one of sub-Saharan Africa’s earliest ironworking traditions, independent of Kush. Their terracotta sculptures—stylized, expressive, and technically advanced—suggest a complex society with specialized artisans. Though little is known about their political structure, Nok culture laid the groundwork for later West African states and proves that technological and artistic innovation was widespread across the continent.
